Speed is not a nice to have. It is measured by Google, it forms part of how pages are ranked, and it decides whether someone waits for your site or returns to the results page.
Three measurements, taken from real visits rather than a laboratory test. How quickly the main content appears. How quickly the page responds when someone interacts. And whether the layout moves about while loading, which is what makes people tap the wrong thing.
They matter because they reflect what your customers experience.
Nearly always the same handful of causes. Images far larger than the space they occupy. Third party scripts, each adding another connection before anything appears. Stylesheets where a fraction is actually used. Fonts that block rendering. And hosting chosen on price, which is the one nobody wants to hear. Almost none of it is the fault of the design, and all of it is fixable.
Serve images at display size in modern formats. Send only the code a page needs. Defer anything not required immediately. Remove third party scripts that are not earning their place. Configure caching and compression properly.
Then measure before and after, so the gain is demonstrable. Our own site scores 100 across all four Lighthouse categories.
Speed is one part. The rest is making sure search engines can reach and understand your pages: a valid sitemap, correct robots directives, canonical tags pointing where they should, structured data, and no chains of redirects wasting crawl budget. We check all of it on every build, and again whenever the site changes shape. None of it is glamorous and all of it is checked.
Every change is measured. If something does not improve the numbers, we say so rather than adding it to a list of work performed. You get the before and after figures, from PageSpeed Insights and from your own analytics, not a summary of effort spent. If a change does not move the numbers, we say so and undo it rather than quietly leaving it in. You get the figures either way.
