Why cheap web hosting ends up costing you more
Hosting is the easiest line on a quote to cut. It is also the one that quietly decides how fast your site loads, how often it is available, and how long you wait when something breaks.
Budget hosting is not a scam. It is simply a different product to the one most small businesses think they are buying.
What two pounds a month actually buys
A slice of a shared server. Your site sits alongside hundreds of others, and you are all drawing on the same processor, the same memory and the same disk.
That works fine until one of your neighbours has a busy day, runs a badly written plugin, or gets attacked. Their problem becomes your slow afternoon, and there is nothing you can do about it from your end.
The speed cost
We have written before about what a slow site does to your visitors and your rankings. Hosting is one of the few causes you cannot fix with better code.
You can build a perfectly efficient page and still watch it crawl, because the server is busy answering somebody else. If your host takes a second to start responding, that second is spent before a single byte of your page has been sent.
The support cost
This is the one people underestimate. Budget hosting is priced on the assumption that you will not ring up.
When something does break, you are usually in a ticket queue, explaining the problem to someone who has never seen your site, at the pace of one reply per day. If that outage is costing you enquiries, the cheap hosting has already stopped being cheap.
The backup and security cost
Check what your backups actually are. Sometimes they exist but restoring one is a paid extra. Sometimes they run weekly, which means a bad week can cost you a week.
An SSL certificate should be included and automatic. If renewing yours is a manual job someone has to remember, it will eventually be forgotten, and visitors will meet a browser warning instead of your business.
What to look for instead
Ask how many sites share your server. Ask what the backup schedule is and what restoring one costs. Ask who answers the phone at four on a Friday afternoon, and how quickly.
Then compare that against the price difference, which for most small businesses is a few pounds a month.
