What are the average scores for Hertfordshire based web design sites? Here's what we could find.
In August 2026 we measured 19 web design agency websites across Hertfordshire using Google PageSpeed Insights. Not their clients' sites. Their own.
We are not naming any of them. This is not that kind of article, and a single measurement on a single day is not a verdict on anyone's business. But the pattern across all 19 is worth your attention, because if a web design company's own site is slow, that is the standard they build to.
Not one site scored 100
The best managed 96, which is genuinely good work. The median was 61. Three sites scored under 50. The average across the whole sample was 63.5.
The number that matters more is loading speed
Google considers a page to load well if its main content appears within 2.5 seconds on a mobile connection. Across 19 agency sites the median was 7.4 seconds. Not one site met the threshold. Only three got under 4 seconds. The slowest took 23 seconds.
This is not a WordPress problem
We expected the platform to explain it. It did not. The WordPress sites in our sample had a median score of 60. The hand-coded and custom-built ones managed 68.5. That gap is too small to mean much, and one of the slowest sites we measured was hand-coded.
Speed is not something a platform gives you or takes away. It is something you either measure or you do not.
What we do differently
Every page on this site scores 100 out of 100 on all four of Google's categories, on mobile and desktop. Our homepage loads its main content in 0.9 seconds on mobile and 0.3 seconds on desktop. That is not one showcase page. It is all 42 pages, and we re-test them after every change.
Why this matters to you
Google has used page speed as a ranking signal for years and it weighs mobile most heavily. Beyond ranking, people leave. A visitor waiting seven seconds on a phone has usually gone before the page finishes drawing itself.
If your site takes seven seconds to load, you are not losing customers to a better website. You are losing them before they see yours at all.
